Helping Children Grow, Regulate, and Thrive
Occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need to participate successfully in everyday life. These everyday activities are called “occupations,” and for children they include playing, learning, building relationships, and becoming more independent.
At Connect and Restore, our occupational therapy services support children in developing the emotional, sensory, and developmental skills they need to feel confident in their daily environments.
Occupational therapy can help children:
Develop play and learning skills
Improve emotional and sensory regulation
Participate more successfully in daily routines
Build social interaction and communication skills
Increase independence with self-care tasks
Our therapists look at the whole child, supporting emotional, sensory, physical, and social development so children can fully engage at home, at school, and in their community.
Is Occupational Therapy Right for My Child?
Many children benefit from occupational therapy when they experience challenges that affect their ability to participate in everyday activities.
Occupational therapy works closely alongside mental health services to support children who may be experiencing:
Sensory processing differences
Behavioral or emotional regulation challenges
Difficulty with attention or impulse control
Social interaction or peer relationship challenges
Struggles with daily routines such as sleep, transitions, hygiene, or school participation
Sensory or regulation needs that make it difficult to fully engage in counseling sessions
Our goal is to help children feel safe, regulated, confident, and successful in their daily lives.
When children receive the right support, they are better able to participate in family routines, friendships, learning, and play.
What Occupational Therapy Will Look Like
We are creating a sensory-rich therapy environment designed to support children’s regulation, movement, and development.
A Sensory-Rich Movement Space
We are proud to offer a gross motor and sensory regulation space designed to support each child’s sensory and movement needs.
This engaging therapy space will include equipment such as:
A therapeutic swing
Tactile sensory bins
A vibration plate
A bounce box
Spinning chairs
A movement tunnel
These tools allow children to receive the sensory input their bodies need to feel calm, organized, and ready to participate.
A Calming Sensory Room
An adjacent room is being designed as a quiet sensory regulation space that promotes relaxation and emotional grounding.
This calming environment will include:
No overhead lighting
A light-up sensory table
Fiber optic lights
Bubble tubes
This space provides children with a safe place to slow down, regulate their nervous system, and reset emotionally when needed.
What a Typical OT Session May Look Like
Every occupational therapy session is individualized to meet the child’s specific needs and goals.
Sessions often begin with targeted sensory input or a personalized sensory diet to help children regulate their bodies and prepare for participation.
Once regulation is established, therapy may transition to play-based or table-based activities designed to support skills such as:
Attention and focus
Fine motor skills
Visual-motor integration
Self-care skills
Emotional regulation
School readiness
For many children, completing an occupational therapy session before a counseling session can be especially helpful, as it supports improved regulation, attention, and emotional readiness for therapy.
Our Child-Centered Approach
Occupational therapy is designed to meet children where they are developmentally while building on their natural strengths.
Our approach is:
Play-Based and Relationship Focused
Children learn best through play. Our sessions are engaging and interactive while supporting meaningful developmental growth.
DIRFloortime® Informed
We support children’s emotional and developmental growth by meeting them at their current level and expanding their ability to communicate, interact, and regulate.
Trauma-Informed
We understand that children’s behaviors are often communication. Our approach prioritizes safety, trust, and emotional understanding.
Developmentally Appropriate and Strength-Based
We focus on each child’s strengths while supporting the next steps in their development.
Collaborative and Family-Centered
Parents and caregivers are an essential part of the process. We work closely with families to provide strategies and tools that support children beyond the therapy room.
We believe meaningful progress happens through connection, trust, and partnership with every family we serve.
Evaluation and Treatment Process
All initial occupational therapy evaluations will be completed by our occupational therapist, who will also develop each child’s individualized plan of care.
To provide consistent weekly therapy services, we plan to hire a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) who shares our therapeutic philosophy and has training in approaches such as DIRFloortime®.
The occupational therapist will continue to:
Provide ongoing supervision
Monitor progress
Update treatment plans as needed
Remain responsible for each child’s overall plan of care
This collaborative model allows us to provide high-quality, individualized therapy while maintaining consistent support for each child.
Helping Children Feel Safe, Confident, and Capable
Our goal is simple:
To help children feel safe, regulated, confident, and capable in their daily environments.
Through occupational therapy, children can develop the skills they need to:
Navigate daily routines with greater ease
Build meaningful relationships
Express their needs and emotions
Participate fully in play, learning, and family life
